Avondale

Lt. Nicholas Snowden and his wife Henrietta Stabler made their home at Avondale where all six of their children were born. After his death in the Civil War in 1862, Henrietta remained at Avondale with her mother-in-law until 1866 when the elder Ms. Snowden died. It was later converted into a military School, the Avondale Country School. Located on the north side of Cherry Lane, between Rt. 1 and the B&O Railroad, it was torn down for commercial development.
